“The Best Thing in a Girl’s Life”: Early Women’s Colleges in Fiction and Fact

The decoration and enjoyment of a cozy, attractive room are mentioned frequently in passing in the stories, and the students spend a lot of time studying and talking in their dorms, but it is not always obvious to a modern reader just what the bedrooms, sitting rooms, shared dormitory parlors, and study spaces really looked like.  Here are four representative images (out of hundred in the Archives) of Bryn Mawr dormitories in the early years of the college.
