Even amateur scammers are accorded notoriety, if not respect.  Here, for example, is Mary Tofts, who in 1726 deceived a number of eminent physicians and surgeons by pretending she had given birth to rabbits on more than one occasion.  She apparently hoped to support herself as a sensation, but her deception was exposed before she earned anything beyond publicity.
