Searching for scholarly journal articles

Subject-specific indexes

Anthropology Plus - Provides worldwide indexing of journal articles, reports, commentaries, edited works, and obituaries in all fields of anthropology and related studies. Coverage is from the late 19th century to the present. Combines Anthropological Literature from Harvard University and the Anthropological Index, Royal Anthropological Institute from the UK.

Bibliography of Asian Studies - Provides citations to western-language periodical articles, chapters in edited volumes, conference proceedings, anthologies, Festschriften, etc. pertaining to east, southeast, and south Asia. Covers 1971 to the present.

Sociological Abstracts - Indexes the literature of sociology and related fields in the social and behavioral sciences. Includes journal articles, reviews, case studies, conference papers, and dissertations. International in scope. 1963 to the present. Updated quarterly. Citations/abstracts, and some links to full text.

Cross-disciplinary databases

JSTOR - Excellent place to start your research. Provides full-text searching of many important scholarly journals. Coverage is from the inception of the journal through three to five years before today.

Infotrac Onefile - Provides indexing, abstracts and many full-text articles from 2,300 academic periodicals in subjects including astronomy, religion, law, history, psychology, humanities, current events, sociology, communications and the general sciences. Articles from 1980 through today.

Searching for articles from foreign newspapers and media

LexisNexis Academic
Includes hundreds of newspapers and magazines -- foreign, domestic and local -- dating back to the 1980s; includes all types of articles, from news to reviews to Opinion/Editorial and letters to the editor.

World News Connection - Includes information from "non-U.S. open-source political speeches, television programs, radio broadcasts, newspaper articles, periodicals, and books. The content focuses primarily on military, political, environmental, scientific, technical, and socioeconomic issues and events."


Finding websites, videos, images, and other materials

Websites

Resources for the Study of Southeast Asia - from U of Wisconsin Libraries - Excellent guide to internet and print resources on the whole region and individual countries. Provides listings of relevant reference books, journals, monographs, organizations, websites, and more. Links to news sources are useful. Sections on print resources are not recently updated.

South East Asia Program: Resources - from Cornell University - Click on Southeast Asia Region-wide Resources and Countries for annotated and reliable links to relevant websites.

Images and photos

AP Photo Archive - to find photos from newspapers, etc. - "The Photo Archive features state, regional and national photos from North America, as well as ... international photos all available moments after they move on the AP's spot picture system. An average of 800 photos a day feed into the Photo Archive, and remain there for a minimum of one year. Specially trained indexers select the best 200 or so photos each day to save for all time, while the remainder are eliminated from the Photo Archive after 12 months."

Videos and DVDs

To find videos and DVDs, including documentaries and feature films, search Tripod and WorldCat. In some cases, videos may be ordered via Interlibrary Loan (use the ILL Books form).

You can use the Internet Movie Database to get reviews and find out more information about the films you locate.
