MedlinePlus - Compiled by the National Library of Medicine, this site brings together many carefully-selected resources for the layperson on hundreds of health topics.
Merck Manuals - Well-regarded medical encyclopedias; full text of the home edition and the professional edition are available online.
CULTURES and COUNTRIES
CIA World Factbook - For quick background information on almost any country. Updated weekly.
World Development Indicators - Use to access numerical data on mortality, literacy, health, and other indicators, for 208 countries and several country groups.

Searching for scholarly journal articles
ProQuest Research Library - Provides indexing, abstracts and many full-text articles from 1700 academic and popular periodicals across a spectrum of disciplines. Articles from 1971 through today.
JSTOR - Full text of most of the top journals in History. Coverage is from the inception of the journal through three to five years before today
Historical Abstracts - Covers the history of the world, excluding Canada and the U.S. , since 1450. Provides indexing to journal articles and books published since 1954. More than 2000 journals are covered, from all over the world and in many languages.
Anthropology Plus - Provides worldwide indexing of journal articles, reports, commentaries, edited works, and obituaries in all fields of anthropology and related studies. Coverage is from the late 19th century to the present. Combines Anthropological Literature from Harvard University and the Anthropological Index, Royal Anthropological Institute from the UK.
Sociological Abstracts - Indexes the literature of sociology and related fields in the social and behavioral sciences. Includes journal articles, reviews, case studies, conference papers, and dissertations. International in scope. 1963 to the present. Citations/abstracts, and some links to full text.
PubMed - Collated by the National Library of Medicine, this is the definitive index of the professional literature of medicine, nursing, the health care system, etc.. Includes references to articles from more than 4800 medical journals and publications from more than 70 countries, going back to the 1960s. Citations/abstracts, and some links to full text.

LexisNexis Academic - Includes hundreds of newspapers and magazines -- foreign, domestic and local -- dating back to the 1980s; includes all types of articles, from news to reviews to Opinion/Editorial and letters to the editor.
