This online resource provides primary source documents relating to women and social movements, including legal documents, diaries, advertisements, letters, speeches, and more.  Also includes images, a dictionary of social movements, a chronology and teaching tools.

Provides long articles on various topics in American social history.  Volume III includes a large section on "Social problems, social control and social protest."  Articles offer helpful bibliographies.

Searching for news articles

Alternative Press Index and Alternative Press Index Archive - Indexes alternative, radical and left periodicals, newspapers and magazines.  Selective indexing of articles from scholarly publications.  Current database covers 1991 - present; Archive covers articles published 1969-1990.

Ethnic Newswatch - Offers full-text articles from newspapers, magazines and journals of the ethnic, minority and native press in America.

Historical New York Times  - Provides full text searching and PDF page images of the New York Times from 1855 until three years ago.  Outstanding resource for historical research!

The Nation Digital Archive - Provides the full text (PDF page images) of The Nation from 1865 to the present.

Finding images and archives

Images and photos

AP Photo Archive - To find photos from newspapers, etc. - "The Photo Archive features state, regional and national photos from North America, as well as ... international photos all available moments after they move on the AP's spot picture system. An average of 800 photos a day feed into the Photo Archive, and remain there for a minimum of one year. Specially trained indexers select the best 200 or so photos each day to save for all time, while the remainder are eliminated from the Photo Archive after 12 months."

flickr.com - To find personal photos uploaded and "tagged" by thousands of individuals.  This isn't a scholarly resource, but can be a quick way to view recent images from around the world.

Google Images - To find images from websites.  This source can be a goldmine. Remember that images are the property of the copyright holder, so don't republish other people's images without asking permission.

Archives

ArchivesUSA - To identify repositories holding the archives of various groups.  You may be able to contact or visit one of these special collections for more information on your group.  Some archives may have digital collections available online.
