Tripod: the Tri-College Online Catalog

Tripod
Tripod gives not only references to books but also to government publications such as Congressional hearings and US and Pennsylvania agency reports. It also has links to online sources.

Databases

Bryn Mawr subscribes to these databases which give references -- some also give abstracts and full text -- to journal articles and other material.

Infotrac Onefile
Provides indexing, abstracts and many full-text articles from academic and popular periodicals in subjects including law, history, psychology, current events and sociology.

PAIS (Public Affairs Information Service)
A good source for public policy articles. Links to online sources and to tri-college locations and holdings. Updated quarterly.


Social Work Abstracts  
A database of the National Association of Social Workers. Contains more than 35,000 records from social work and related journals. 1977 to the present. Displays tri-college locations and holdings. Updated semiannually.

Databases for Special Populations

Ageline  
"AGELINE provides bibliographic coverage of social gerontology, which is the study of aging in psychological, health-related, social, and economic contexts.  The delivery of health care to the older population and its associated costs and policies is particularly well covered, as are consumer, employment, and public policy issues.  Inclusive coverage is from 1978 to the present, with selected coverage from 1966 to 1977." Displays tri-college locations and holdings. Updated three times a year.

Family Studies Database
Provides records and abstracts from Family Studies Database (FSD) (1970-present) and Australian Family & Society Abstracts (FAMILY) (1980-present). FSD is published by NISC in association with the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR). FAMILY is produced by the Australian Institute of Family Studies. Updated monthly.

Newspaper Indexes and Full Text Articles

LEXIS-NEXIS Academic Universe
Full-text searching of hundreds of media including national and regional newspapers, magazines, wire services, transcripts, and more. Highlights: New York Times from 1980 to date; Los Angeles Times from 1985 to date; Washington Post from 1977 to date; National Public Radio from 1992 to date; Newsweek from 1975 to date. College access is limited to students, faculty, and staff for academic purposes. Updated daily.

NewsBank
Full-text searchable interface to the Philadelphia Inquirer (from 1982) and the Philadelphia Daily News (from 1978) .

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
Departmental news and publications. Includes the current DHHS budget and a gateway to women's health information.

Health Care Financing Administration
The HCFA is the federal agency that administers the Medicare, Medicaid, and Child Health Insurance programs.  Their web site includes a wealth of information on these programs, statistics and data, laws and regulations, local contacts, and more.

State Sites

Pennsylvania (state page) - Department of Health
Includes health statistics and research, information on public health programs, and contact phone numbers.

New Jersey (state page) - Department of Health and Senior Services - Department of Human Services
State page provides links to agencies. Brochures and fact sheets, information on regulations, public health programs and how to file a complaint, directories and contact information, and a site search engine.

Connecticut (state page) - Department of Social Services - Department of Children and Families
State page contains links to various agencies. DSS section contains information about programs and services, downloadable brochures, etc. Also see http://www.huskyhealth.com/ , CT's new Healthcare for UninSured Kids and Youth program.

AARP

A great information source for people over 50, and for social workers interested in helping them. Links for "information and research", "volunteer and community programs", and "issues and advocacy".

American Cancer Society

Statistics, news, support, information on research, treatment, alternative therapies, and more.

The ARC (formerly the Association for Retarded Citizens)
Frequently asked questions, reports, links to other self-help groups, online discussion board, and more.

General Sources for finding health-related organizations

Links and a search engine lead you to sites and documents related to health issues and health care.

Yahoo: Directory of Health Organizations
Links to hundreds of health-related organizations, organized hierarchically. Click on Diseases and Conditions for a full list of conditions and their related organizations, or on a population group (Geriatrics and Aging, Women's Health, Children's) for those links.
