letter, the political climate. "I was talking . . . with a gentleman
just arrived from the continent--an American--who has come over expressly
to set his house in order for war." In the second, he writes of a
sailing race that was cancelled and mentions several acquaintances and
their sailing plans. In the third, he recounts the latest gossip of the
New York social scene.
