Ingersoll, a prominent Philadelphian, was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives
for many years, and a well-known orator and author. Both letters comment on
his writings, which he had sent copies of to Jefferson. In the October 16
letter, Jefferson remarks, "But governments never improve otherwise than
by revolution."

Two of the letters are introductions of members of Jefferson's family to Dr.
Hosack on the occasions of their visits to New York. The 1821 letter thanks
him for a biography of Dr. Williamson and discusses a packet of seeds from
the king's garden in Paris.
