Lawrence hours, use of Cambrai
1. ff. 1r-12v Calendar from the region of Valenciennes-Mons,
rather sparse, in French, written in red and black ink. Saints include: Auldegon (30 Jan.), Gietrud (17 Mar.), Servais (14 May), Alban (21 June), Gery (11 Aug.), Fuscien (6 Sept.), Hubert (6 Sept.), Benoit (8 Oct.), Hubert (3 Nov.), Martin (11 Nov. in red), Nycaise (14 Dec. in red).
2. ff. 13r-16v Prayers and Psalms:
Pater noster; Ave Maria gratia plena; Credo in deum patrem; Magnificat; Nunc dimittis; Ave salus mundi; Benedicite dominus.

7. f. 117r-v Suffrage to St. Barbara. First rubric, in blue ink, in French.

Saints in the Litany include: Adriane, Quintine, Quirine, Nychasi, Christophore, Anthoni, Crispine, Gaugerici, Huberte, Ambrosi, Egidi, Eligi, Servati, Vincenti, Huberte, Anastasia, Gertrudis, Aldegundis, Waldedrudis, Ursula. Prayers: Concede quesumus omnipotens Deus; Ineffabilem misericordiam tuam nobis domine clementer; Fidelium Deus omnium conditor. f. 141r-v ruled but blank.
9. ff. 142r-179v Office of the Dead.

10. ff. 180r-187v Fifteen joys of the Virgin:

Parchment, ff. v + 187 + ii (one loose), 200 x 142 (115 x 80) mm., modern foliation in lead, ff. 142-147 numbered 143-148. Calendar written in five columns (fourth empty) of 17 ruled lines with single horizontal and vertical bounding lines. Remainder of the text written in 13 ruled lines with much variation between quires: some ruled in dark red ink, some bright red and some brown; variation also in bounding lines from double vertical and horizontal lines full across to double vertical and single horizontal to both framing lines single.
I8, II4, III-XI8, XII4, XIII-XV8, XVI8 (-1, 2, 8), XVII-XX8, XXI8 (-8), XXII-XXIII8, XXIV8 (-8), XXV8. About half the quires have catchwords placed horizontally in lower center margin, written in different styles. Remains of prickings and signatures on some quires.
Written by several scribes in a large gothic bookhand that varies in quality.
Although there are no obvious lacunae in the text, several leaves have been removed probably containing illuminations, and possibly, in quire XVI, additional suffrages. The remaining decoration (on ff. 13r, 16v, 21r, 46v, 58v, 63r, 67v, 71v, 75v, 82v, ff. 93r, 95r, 97r, 99v, 101v, 105r, 117r, 118r, and 180r) consists of an elaborate border completely framing the text with pen-work vinestems ending in gold leaves, acanthus leaves, fruit, and flowers in a palette of soft colors: green, blue, lavender, gray, pink, orange, yellow, and brown. No red is used. Additionally, most of these borders contain drolleries--whimsical birds, animals, men, and mythical creatures. The drawings on f. 21r are especially worth noting: a mythical creature; a jester in orange and yellow stripes on another man's shoulders; a knight riding a half-goat/half lion; and a monkey dressed as a priest, preaching from a pulpit to a flock of geese. The mermaid holding her mirror and comb on f. 46v is also notable. The text is separated from the border on the bottom and two sides by a frame extending from an initial which varies from elaborate gold and multi-colored strapwork to gold alternating with pink sectional frames to simple gold and black frames; each leaf is different. On f. 21r, the first leaf of the Office of the Virgin, a 4-line initial starts the frame. It is pink and blue with white penwork on a gold ground, inset with back to back griffins. The other folios substitute 3-line initials, some with geometric or curving branchwork with colorful floral terminals, some with a pink, blue, and gold checked pattern on black ground overlaid with a grid of white lines; again variation is the rule. On f. 13r a scroll with the words "non nostra voluntas sed tua fuit" twines around the frame. These decorations vary in complexity and skill. The leaves following f. 89r, with the exception of f. 118r and 180r, are considerably less ornate and complex than the earlier pages. The drolleries, if any, are limited to one or two birds or animals. The entire text has many 1- and 2-line gold initials and line fillers, each on a ground of pink and blue with white penwork; some of the 2-line initials are infilled with white penwork birds, animals, or flowers. Rubrication throughout in red.
Text rubbed in several places, some brown staining mars text and/or border decoration in places. On ff. i, 20, 140, 141, and 142 marks indicating the past presence of pilgrimage stamps may be seen.
Binding: original fifteenth-century blind-tooled leather over chamfered wooden boards, silver quatrefoil clasps on front hold leather and ribbon straps, lower clasp depicts St. Christopher, upper clasp (possibly) St. George; edges gilt; rebacked.
Written in the French Flanders region of Valenciennes-Mons towards 1450. On f. i recto a suffrage to St. Quentin, in a later hand, in French, with initials wanting: "[E]gregie cristi martir quintine suscipe preces...," and on f. i recto-iii recto, 37 lines of text, in a later hand, in Dutch. Early provenance unknown. Shelf mark on spine: "22". From the library of Marion Lawrence, New York City, and given by her niece Elizabeth M. Grobe to Bryn Mawr College in 1978.
