Africa

Africa remained largely unexplored by Europeans long after commercial, colonial, and missionary activities had been established in Asia and the Americas. Christian missionaries were among the first Europeans to venture into the interior of Africa, and occasionally they had their experiences published. A seventeenth-century example is Giovanni Antonio Cavazzi's Istorica descrizione de' tre' regni Congo, Matamba et Angola. Interest in Africa increased as the wealth of the continent's resources became apparent. In 1734, a time when the commodification of the African people depended upon their dehumanization at the hands of European colonizers, William Snelgrave wrote a formulaic description of European activity in Africa entitled A New Account of Some Parts of Guinea, and the Slave-Trade. Serious scientific expeditions, like that carried out by Peter Kolb, remained rare until the late eighteenth-century. Suddenly, with the birth of the African Association in 1788, which professed to be "a few individuals, strongly impressed with a conviction of the practicability and utility of thus enlarging the fund of human knowledge" there followed a flood of exploration into Africa and accompanying travel accounts. While the anti-slavery movement completely changed the concept of commercial activity in Africa, European interest in the African continent and its people was still driven by dreams of wealth. Edward Bowdich, for example, was motivated to explore the continent as a naturalist, but also as an entrepreneur attempting to establish trade agreements. New narrative modes were developed by travelers exploring and writing under the auspices of the African Association. The sentimentalism employed by Mungo Park in his account Travels in the Interior Districts of Africa is a case in point.

Adams, Robert, Sailor.
The narrative of Robert Adams, a sailor, who was wrecked on the western coast of Africa, in the year 1810, was detained three years in slavery by the Arabs of the Great Desert, and resided several months in the city of Tombuctoo. With a map, notes, and an appendix.
