The Americas

Marine exploration eventually brought Europeans to the continents that came to be known as the Americas. Upon contact with the New World in the late fifteenth-century, a flurry of commercial and colonial activity ensued as the Spanish, Portugese, French, Dutch, and English all sought to expand their empires westward. European explorers often struggled with the challenge of describing the physical and social geography of these non-European lands. Accounts of the mistreatment, torture, and slaughter of the indigenous people, such as Bartolomé de las Casas An Account of the First Voyages and Discoveries made by the Spaniards in America: Containing the most Exact Relation Hitherto Publish'd, of their Unparallel'd Cruelties on the Indians, in the Destruction of Above Forty Millions of People, (in our collection, in its sixteenth century English translation), are often deeply disturbing to modern readers. As European settlements in the Americas spread, so too did the boundaries of exploration for ethnographers, natural scientists and adventurers. The boundaries were pushed both north and west (see, for instance, Henry Ellis' A Voyage to Hudson's-Bay in 1748, and George Kendall's Narrative of the Texan Santa Fé Expedition in 1847). By the nineteenth-century many North American cities were becoming desirable tourist destinations not only for American leisure travelers, but also for visitors from abroad, as the number of guidebooks and travelers' accounts pertaining to America attests.
