Return to Introduction Return to the description of the collection This is not an image of European travelers in Egypt, but rather, Europeans viewing a reconstruction of an ancient Egyptian tomb in the Bibliotheque nationale in Paris. Those unable to travel and see the sights of Egypt firsthand could imaginatively make the trip by visiting such an exhibition. This also illustrates that explorers were acquiring cultural artifacts as well as knowledge abroad, and material proof of their discoveries was often imported back into Europe.
