Travel Literature
Europe
Description Census of Related BMC Library Travel Literature Geographical Groups
Europeans were, of course, also fascinated by the beauty and allure of their own lands and the peculiarities of their closest neighbours. Traveling around Europe, also known as embarking on the Grand Tour, was considered a crucial step in completing one's education. Such travel was regarded as both intellectually and morally improving and was initially the exclusive privilege of the upper classes. Tourism became somewhat democratized as infrastructures for transportation were established throughout Europe in the eighteenth and nineteenth-centuries. As traveling became more possible, and more popular, a greater variety of literature about and in the service of leisure travel poured onto the market. A genre formerly dominated by what were often tediously descriptive journals underwent a change as personal accounts of leisure travel became increasingly novelistic. Such travel accounts were usually unillustrated, and those which did include plates tended to offer romantic, idealized images of landscape and peasant populations, without representing the presence of the traveler in their midst.
