Madame Marie Josèphine de l'Escun de Monbart was born in Paris, but spent much of her life in Germany. Les Loisirs contains poetry, moral stories, and letters. Written when Monbart was only eighteen, it is the first edition of her first book. Many of her works, fiction and nonfiction, discuss the social status of women. The library also holds her next book, Sophie; òu, De l'éducation des filles (1777).
This copy of the book is in old, worn paper wrappers (marbled paper over cardboard) with a badly worn spine. Conservation will strengthen the binding and fill in the gaps in the covering material, making it possible to use the volume without risking further damage.
