The Bryn Mawr College lantern slides that have been digitized and presented through the Lantern Slides of Classical Antiquity Project are available to all on the Web; however, certain restrictions as to their use apply.
Some of the images we have posted are digital versions derived from original photographs taken expressly for the college as "works for hire," and the copyright on those images is held by the College. Others are images on which the copyright has expired, according to US law. Still others are, we believe, images derived from photographs donated to the College for use according to the needs and desires of the College. The issue of copyright with this category of images is unclear, and we cannot be certain that every image in this category was donated with all attendant rights. We are making all these images available on the web in the belief that we have the right to display them, and we believe that access to them serves important scholarly purposes.
Nevertheless, any user must understand that the rights to use these images may not always be clear and absolute, even for educational, non-profit purposes. Furthermore, because of the lack of clarity, we must expressly forbid any copying or printing of the images without permission as well as any commercial or fund-raising use of the images. Without permission from the College, these images are available for public display through this Web site only.
If a specific image (either one of those posted on the web or one of the higher-resolution archival images) is desired for linking via URL, printing, local copying, or commercial use and if the College has a clear copyright, such use may be granted. For more information about the use of any particular image and whether a fee applies, please contact the Head of the Visual Resources Center, Camilla MacKay, (610) 526-7910 or Visual Resources Center, Carpenter Library, Bryn Mawr College, 101 N. Merion Ave, Bryn Mawr, PA 19010.
