Monday, March 10 from 9:00 to 4:30: Gaming and Teaching: Virtual Environments for Liberal Education (LLC). This event is offered in conjunction with NITLE's Workshops-To-Go. " From their roots in text and crude graphics, online interactive games have evolved into sophisticated virtual worlds featuring everything from collaborative building projects to sailing competitions buffeted by in-world winds to swordfights and death rays. In the process, they've captured the imaginations of college students, media scholars, and a large swath of the global audience. In this workshop, faculty members and their academic support partners will learn about contemporary directions in the scholarship of teaching with gaming and gain hands-on experience in a virtual world such as Second Life. Participants will consider issues and concerns surrounding the selection, implementation, and support of online gaming in the higher education context. Additionally, participants will discuss and learn from case studies of the real-world use of these environments and games in college teaching and learning. Participants will leave the workshop with a concrete understanding of how to use online gaming and virtual environments as tools to promote active learning." (www.NITLE.org) Find Out More

Tuesday, March 11 from 9:00 to 4:30: Digital Audio Workshop (LLC). This event is offered in conjunction with NITLE's Workshops-To-Go. This workshop helps participants to develop an understanding of sound recording and skills for creating, capturing, and editing quality digital sound for teaching and learning. Engaging in hands-on practice, participants learn to use the open-source sound editor Audacity. They will complete a digital audio project from start to finish, including storyboarding, scripting, recording, editing, and output. Participants will leave with a complete digital audio project and a plan for employing digital audio for teaching and learning." Thursday, March 13 from 9:00 to 4:30: Digital Image Editing (Swarthmore). This event is offered in conjunction with NITLE's Workshops-To-Go. "Thanks to digital cameras, photo-sharing sites like Flickr, and Google Image Search, digital images are readily available. When using such images to teach, however, instructors sometimes find that available images need tweaking before they can be used successfully to support teaching goals or create the right learning moments. Digital image editing allows users to manipulate images to change their size and shape or improve their quality. In this workshop, participants will learn about basic scanning and still image manipulation using Adobe Photoshop. Topics include basic color theory, terminology, image file types, document management tools, cropping and rotating images, basic and intermediate selection tools, drawing and painting tools, basic color correction, and type tools. Participants will gain an understanding of the mechanics of image and graphic editing and how to use these skills to design and structure material to address curricular and pedagogical needs. " (www.NITLE.org) To attend, Bryn Mawr faculty and staff should notify Mark Colvson before February 1, 2008.

Since these tools do not require lengthy training, they can be easily integrated into curricula and research. Participants in this workshop will learn how easy-to-use, intuitive web-mapping and virtual globe applications can be used to develop spatially or geographically-based curricula. For example, web-mapping allows teachers and their students to
