Careers of Mathematics Majors Studying or majoring in mathematics opens the door to an enormous number of opportunities in the job market as well as in graduate school-- so much so that mathematics is hailed as one of the most versatile majors available. According to Jobs Rated Almanac, a 1999 publication, careers in mathematics were listed among the top five best jobs out of 250 job classifications. The jobs were rated according to the criteria of income, outlook, physical demands, security, stress, and work environment. If you are unsure as to what you want to do after graduation, mathematics provides the perfect major, since you are gauranteed to have a host of possibilities at your fingertips. Perhaps this notion is best captured in the message of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), where the following statement loomed on public billboards: "What do you want to do? Do math, and you can do anything." The Career Development Office (CDO), located on the second floor of the Campus Center, can assist you in finding internships, externships, research jobs, jobs in not-for-profit organizations, and summer jobs, as well as full-time jobs and information on graduate/professional schools upon graduation. Visit the CDO counselor (ext. 5174) early in your college career. The website is: http://www.brynmawr.edu/cdo/. In addition, the following websites contain valuable information regarding careers in mathematics: http://www.maa.org/students/career.html Here we have a list of Bryn Mawr alumnae who majored in Mathematics and their personal statements about the activities they have pursued after graduation. The statements make for an interesting read, and we hope they are helpful in deciding on possible career paths! Many have indicated that they would be pleased to hear from current students who have questions or are looking for advice.
