Practice: What to do when you do not know what to do?

 

Question: If n2 is an even number, what can you say about n? Here n represents a natural number which could be 1, 2, 3, 4, É

-           is n always even?

-           Is n always odd?

-           Can n sometimes be even and sometimes be odd (i.e. it depends)?

 

 

a.       Explore, play, try out various numbers, make a table, make a diagram/graph (if appropriate).

b.       Look for a pattern

c.        Once you think you have found the pattern, make a Conjecture. In the Conjecture, you should state what you think the result is.

d.       Try to prove your conjecture.
