Is there any feedback you would like to give me about the course? (Pace of class, amount/difficulty of hw, balance of lecture vs group work, etc. )

.11/6/2008 2:56:00 AMThe pace of class is great, the homework I'm finding a bit challenging. I realize that how much time we have in class is an issue. I wish there was some way that we could do more types of example problems in class to make the homework go smoother. I like the group work and I think it is often enough! ;) Thank you!
.11/6/2008 3:06:00 AMCurrently, I am having a good deal of trouble with the chain rule and related rates. I think, however, this will be helped with homework. I find the amount of homework to be fair and fitting to what we are learning; it is very helpful. Plus, the TA sessions are also very helpful. I think the lecture in combination with the group work has helped a good deal also.
.11/6/2008 3:06:00 AMI am having a lot of trouble still with Related Rates. The connection between the image and the mathematical reasoning still isn't connecting for me. That is always something I've had trouble with. Can we spend more time on this?
.11/6/2008 3:12:00 AMI like the in class group work.
.11/6/2008 3:15:00 AMSometimes I feel like in class, while we're learning new information, the problem goes off on a seemingly unrelated tangent. All the information being thrown on at once is a lot to absorb and things go a little too fast paced. This is mostly with the very difficult subjects like related rates.
.11/6/2008 3:21:00 AMSometimes I feel like I only know how to do the examples we did in class but lack sufficient knowledge of the actual topic and theory to undersand the homework problems. Some more time on the theory and how to approach the questions in general might be good.
.11/6/2008 3:24:00 AMI really love the way the course is run - I don't consider myself a math-oriented person, but I find the information is presented in a way that I'm able to understand, and I also find the plethora of support (PLI, TA sessions, et cetera) available to be great. My only minor issue is that I don't find the group activities as helpful as they theoretically could be - I'm much better at being shown what do to, trying it on my own, and then seeing it before my eyes. Other people tend to confuse me. But anyway - REALLY ENJOYING THE CLASS! Thank you for making math enjoyable.
.11/6/2008 3:36:00 AMI was never really a math person until I entered this course. I'm still not a math person but i am more interested in it now than ever. Never in a million years would I have imagined myself considering taking a second Calculus course. i think you're a great professor. I really like your teaching style. I appreciate how you always give us a chance to learn from our mistakes without penalizing us. I also like how you are so open to feedback and care so much about what we, the student think. As far as the course is concerned, at times I think we move a little quickly in class. The Related Rate problems are very difficult and as hard as I try I'm always still somewhat confused. Can we please spend more time on this topic, especially the beginning of the problems. I think the group work is beneficial sometimes. It would be beneficial at all times if specific people gave others the chance to work through the problems as opposed to dominating the conversation or "showing off" their knowledge.
.11/6/2008 3:42:00 AMThe pace of class is just perfect. =D I like the homework problems. They are adequately difficult. Balance of lecture vs group work is also perfect. =)
.11/6/2008 4:03:00 AMamount of homework
.11/6/2008 4:26:00 AMThis class has definitely picked up pace in the past two weeks, I struggle with a great deal of the homework even though I have taken Calculus before. I appreciate how we do more "figuratave" examples in class, but sometimes it is hard to approach a literal problem in the homework when I have never seen a real example. numbers are very helpful. I really appreciate the group work and how we go over problems together. This balance is really good, the hour long class seems to go quickly. Bringing humor to the classroom also makes it worlds better than some classes I have taken, thanks.
.11/6/2008 5:18:00 AMi think the pace is pretty fast but this is due to the fact that i dont have a calculus background. Maybe the surveys we did in the beginning of the year can be of use. there are students who have never taken calc before. maybe we there could be designated TLI/TA hours for specific students that need a slower pace of the class. TLI and TA will review the work but in step by step form.
.11/6/2008 5:32:00 AMI think the class is a good class, and I like the way you teach math (in layman's terms). The amount of homework is reasonable, but the textbook is awful. It isn't very useful at all in explaining anything, and sometimes the problems seem unusual or unclear. This is made worse when the concept wasn't fully explored in class or was rushed through due to time constraints. The TA (bazuma) is fantastic though! With some extra effort (going to office hours, TA sessions, etc.) a student can do very well in your class. If I had to take another math course, I would aim to take it with you.
.11/6/2008 2:49:00 PMThere is A LOT of homework to do and I have a hard time finishing it sometimes.
.11/6/2008 4:43:00 PMI am enjoying the class. I like the fact that we have group work!
.11/6/2008 6:41:00 PMI really like the way you teach. You reallly care about our understanding of the topic and it really makes a difference.
.11/6/2008 9:28:00 PMThe Group work is really useful and I appreciate the fact that we learn through way apart from the standard lecture and home work problems!
.11/6/2008 10:17:00 PMI really like the pace we are moving at, and I feel like I am really learning a lot rather than simply receiving grades and moving on.
.11/6/2008 10:23:00 PMI think that maybe if we spent a little more time as a class going over problems: for example I am having trouble with the related rates problem and I don't believe the rest of my group understands them either, so it makes class time almost a waste. However, besides that I think the class is going very well.
.11/6/2008 10:33:00 PMI must say that I'm not a big fan of the Connections project. I don't think that it really helps with my understanding of math or its effect on the world.
.11/7/2008 2:29:00 AMI really wish you would let us redo homework!!! Sometimes my mistakes are so simple but yet I still end up getting a T even though I feel I have mastered the subject.
.11/7/2008 4:06:00 AMI wish we could have more lecture. I find the amount of group work pretty stressful, and although it helps me to get problems done, I'm not sure it helps me to understand them. Also, when we review for tests, I think having a class of directed review would be really helpful.
.11/7/2008 4:51:00 AMI love this class. The way it is taught makes it fun, and the groups are helpful. Sometimes I feel like the lectures are a bit of a blur, though. When I'm confused about something, I feel like I have to focus on writing down what's on the board, and then I miss what you say. Then this adds to my confusion. I've attended most of the TA sessions with Bethie and have found them to be extremely helpful with sorting out most of my confusion though.
.11/7/2008 1:36:00 PMSometimes I feel it is a bit fast, but then I often can't make extra help except for Fridays. Often I don't know what to ask.
.11/9/2008 6:32:00 AMPersonally most of my learning is done at home reviewing the book's example, because in class i do not have time to reflect what is going on because i am too busy trying to copy down all of the notes.
