Goal: To draw contour curves in the domain of a function f(x,y)

Directions: Each person will determine their own a different contour lines. On your own piece of paper, make your calculations and draw your curves. Then make a group picture showing all the contour lines together.

  1. f( x, y) = 6x + 2y.

Individual:

  1. Person 1: Determine the contour line for f(x,y) = 0 and f(x,y) = -1
  2. Person 2: Determine the contour line for f(x,y) = 1 and f(x,y) = -2
  3. Person 3: Determine the contour line for f(x,y) = 2 and f(x,y) =-3
  4. Person 4: Determine the contour line for f(x,y) = 3 and f(x,y) = -4

Group: When everyone has done their individual calculations, then graph all the curves on one picture below. Add the contour curves one after anther to the picture. Add the curves in the following order: f = -4, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3.

 2. Working together. Draw the contour curves for the function g(x,y) = exp( x2 + y2).

 Draw the curve g = 1, e1, e4, e9, e27, e36.
