SPSS
Assignment 4 (due March 18)
Do these “data analysis” problems from Chapter 5 of
the SPSS text (pages 97-98):
Problem
11, parts abcd (Use the “salbeg”
variable in “salary.sav”. Skip the
comparison
to problem 6a, and skip part e).
Also:
What is the IQR for this variable?
(It’s
a one-step calculation from your answer to part d.)
Problem
12, parts a and b (only).
Problem
16, all parts (a, b, c, d, e). Use
variables “chol58” and “dbp58” from “electic.sav”.
Report your results in the form of a
word-processor document.
HINTS
AND SUGGESTIONS
For problem 11, parts a and b, it isn’t
necessary to print (or copy) two histograms.
Answer the question in part a, but wait and show the histogram after
making the changes in part b.
Recall how to edit a histogram: Create it in the usual way, so that it
appears in your output file. Then,
double-click on the graphic itself. The
edit window gives you many wonderful powers; you should spend some time
experimenting and make the histogram look as pretty and informative as you
can. Finally, close the edit window —
the histogram in the output file should now reflect the edits.
You can make SPSS do all the work for you on
problem 16, parts abcd — have SPSS print out a “descriptives” table for the
standardized variables. Part e probably
requires calculations by hand. You’ll
need the average and SD of the “dbp58” variable, but maybe you can find them in
the output you produced for part d.
