General description: The goal of elementary number theory is to understand the properties of the integers, {..., -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3,...}, and a variety of related concepts and functions. We will study divisibility, primality, congruences, multiplicative functions, quadratic residues, continued fractions, and other topics as time permits.
Assignments: Homework will be assigned each class period, due the next. Collaboration on homework is encouraged. Weekly quizzes will be organized by web and email if possible. There will be two interim exams and a final. Grading (tentative): homework and quizzes 25%, interim exams 20% each, final 35%.
Students who think they may need accommodations in this course because of a disability or for any other reason are encouraged to meet with me privately early in the semester.
