Changing Pedagogies in Math and Science Education
Education 220, Spring 2002
Professor Victor J. Donnay, Bryn Mawr College Professor Deborah Pomeroy, Arcadia University
Schedule for Lecture Series open to the general community. Directions to lecture hall.
On Saturday April 6, there will be an all day workshop at Bryn Mawr College sponsored by the group Project Kalidescope (PKAL) on the topic of K-16 connections in math and science education. Information at the web site: http://serendip.brynmawr.edu/local/scisoc/pkal/
Students will learn about the new pedagogies of hands-on, active, student centered learning as well as the issues that arise in trying to implement these new teaching methods. This course is part of Bryn Mawr's new Praxis program that combines theory and practice so all students will have a field placement (4-6 hr per week) in an educational setting that is using new or innovative teaching methods. The students will both observe teaching and also do tutoring themselves.
The class will meet once a week, Tuesday evenings from 7-10pm. The first half of the meeting (7-8:30pm) will be lectures and panel presentations on topics in the course . These presentations will be given by a cadre of guest lectures drawn from the Tri-college faculty, from local school districts and from invited visitors to the college. The second half of each meeting (8:30 - 10pm) will involve student reflection and discussion on their experiences.
Host teachers for the course will be designated Bryn Mawr Mathematics and Science Education Fellows. They will be eligible to attend the weekly lectures for which they will receive no cost C.E.Us. The Bryn Mawr student will assist and / or tutor in the host teachers classroom.
