TEACHING ASSISTANTS IN SPANISH

Thank you for your interest in the teaching assistantships at Bryn Mawr College’s Department of Spanish.

INFORMATION

At the elementary and intermediate levels, Spanish Language classes are supplemented by group sessions taught by apprentice teachers trained during a pre-semester workshop.


The training workshop takes place on the Thursday and Friday prior to the beginning of the fall semester, in which Teaching Assistant candidates are exposed to major trends and techniques in language acquisition theory and praxis. TAs are selected at the end of the workshop.


Nine assistantships are available this year for elementary and intermediate classes. To be eligible for such a position you must be a Bryn Mawr undergraduate and be enrolled in or have completed courses at the 200-level or have equivalent proficiency in Spanish.


At both levels the Teaching Assistant is responsible for:


a) one hour/week drilling the students in material taught by the instructor in the Master classes; supervising interactive and task-oriented activities designed to encourage communication in the target language. Such activities include: rapid-paced communicative drills, dialogues, simulations, pantomime, role-playing, discussions, debates, interviews, skits, and videos.


b) preparing for the sessions.


c) meeting with course coordinator for problem-solving and discussion of the following week's activities.


The hours are as follows:

* Elementary level – Total: 2 hours per week


• 1 hour teaching group session on (day TBD).


Spanish 001, at 8:00-9:00 am; Spanish 001, at 9:00-10:00 am
Spanish 002, at 8:00-9:00 am; Spanish 002, at 9:00-10:00 am


• 1/2 hour preparation;
• 1/2 hour meeting with course coordinator (time to be arranged).

* Intensive Intermediate – Total: 2 hours per week


• 1 hour teaching group session on Mondays


Spanish 101 - 1 section at 5:00-6:00 pm
Spanish 101 – 2 sections at 7:00-8:00 pm
Spanish 102 – 2 sections at 7:00-8:00 pm


• 1/2 hour preparation;
• 1/2 hour meeting with course coordinator (time to be arranged).


* Interested candidates in these positions must read the Workshop General Information, and complete the on-line Application Form by April 30th.


* Once you have been notified that your application has been received and accepted, please fill out the on-line Workshop Registration Form at your earliest convenience, but no later than July 7th.
