Goals:

§       Participants will understand what we mean by inquiry and it is more effective.

§       Participants will get engaged in some of the strategies of inquiry instruction and start to think about what this means for their own teaching and/or schools.

§       Participants will learn how to utilize inquiry strategies in their educational contexts.

§       Participants will work together across institutional and departmental boundaries.

Session 1 -- October 28: 9:00 am- 1:00 pm (Lunch included)

Audience

§       IHE-PI's, deans, department chairs

§       SD Administrators (curriculum coordinators through superintendents)

§       All MSPGP staff

Program

§       Keynote address by Dr. Lawrence Lowery,

§       Break-out sessions around inquiry learning,

§       General session focusing reports of successful implementations

§       Break-out session around specific strategies for effective collaboration

§       Regional networking luncheon focusing on ways that disciplinary faculty can get involved with school districts

Session 2 -- October 28: 1:00 pm -3:30 pm (No Lunch)

Audience

§       All MSPGP staff

§       SD administrative staff who wish to participate

 

Program

§       Refining professional development strategies that engage students in inquiry learning

§       School district, IHE and MSPGP small group networking

§       Dr. Lowery provides small group coaching and feedback

 

Session 3 -- October 29:9:00am -3:30 pm (Lunch included)

Audience

§       IHE STEM faculty

§       2-3 science or math teachers (Dept chairs or other identified teacher-leaders) from each district

 

Program

§       Keynote address by Dr. Lowery,

§       Break-out session around inquiry learning,

§       Break-out sessions with in-depth looks at some successful implementations and strategies

§       Networking luncheon (seating by regions SD & IHE's together)

§       General session focusing on ways the grant is evolving as a core connector

§       Break-out session around specific strategies for effective collaboration

§       General session summary of ways that disciplinary faculty can get involved

 

 

Champion For Science

Lawrence Lowery

Dr. Lawrence Lowery was inducted into the Texas Science Hall of Fame and named the 2002 Champion for Science at the Texas Science Summit held January 21­22 in San Antonio, Texas. Dr. Lowery is a professor emeritus at the University of California at Berkeley. He remains active as the Principle Investigator for the Full Option Science System (FOSS).

Dr. Lowery is the author of more than 50 articles and 31 books. His works include books published by the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development and a supplement to the National Science Education Standards, published by the National Research Council.

He continues to publish and edit articles and books, the most recent being The Kingfisher Science Encyclopaedia (New York and London, 1993), Pathways-Guidelines to Implementing the Science Standards (NSTA publication, 1997), The Biological Basis for Thinking and Learning (Lawrence Hall of Science Monograph, 1998), How Science Curriculums Reflect Brain Research (Phi Delta Kappan article, November 1998), one of several authors of Teaching for Inquiry (National Science Education Standards Addendum, 2000) and Developing Minds (Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, 2001).

His many accolades include the Presidentıs Quality Gold Award from Sandia Laboratories for the Distinguished Program in Science Education (LASER), the Distinguished Career in Science Award from the NSTA, the Outstanding Science Educator Award from the Association for the Education of Teachers of Science, and the Outstanding Teacher Education Program for Elementary Science award from the California State Department of Education.
