Catherine began her career in journalism and public relations, but increasingly turned her focus to social change organizations. After several years of working as a consultant specializing in public relations, development and advocacy campaigns for regional nonprofits, she served as Press Secretary in the 1992 Lynn Yeakel for US Senate campaign in Pennsylvania during the highly charged so-called “Year of the Woman”. Combining her passion for social policy and nonprofit organizations, she returned to academia and graduated from Bryn Mawr College Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research with a Masters in Social Services and a Masters in Law and Social Policy. She was Director of Education of Living Beyond Breast Cancer and directed WOMENS WAY 25- a year-long substantive examination and celebration of women’s progress as seen through the lens of a progressive women’s funding federation. She has taught in the social policy sequence in the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Policy and Practice (2002-2006); is an Advisory Board Member and former President of the Board of Laurel House; is on the Board of Directors of the Center for Responsible Funding and serves on the Community Grantmaking Committee for Bread & Roses Community Fund. The NELI Executive Leadership Certificate program was founded in the summer of 2004 and enrolled its first class in 2005. Today the fourth class is engaged in activities that build the capacity of leaders and their organizations.
“NELI provides a wonderful opportunity for personal development, networking with colleagues and exploring knowledge in areas essential to nonprofit management. The executive coaching sessions have been extremely valuable to my leadership development and career goals.” - Catherine Malkemes, Chief Membership and Program Officer, Girls Scouts of Southeastern Pennsylvania |
