Lord, Iwasaki Stage Gertrude Stein Play
In Tribute to Goodhart Before Renovation

Mark Lord

The Theater Program of Bryn Mawr and Haverford Colleges will present Doctor Faustus Lights the Lights, Gertrude Stein's playful reimagining of the tale of Faust selling his soul to the devil, on Nov. 9, 10, 11, 15, 16 and 17, at 7:30 p.m. in Bryn Mawr's Goodhart Theater. This production will be the final offering from director Mark Lord and designer Hiroshi Iwasaki before remodeling of Goodhart Hall begins next year.

In Doctor Faustus Lights the Lights, the Devil's bargaining chip is the invention of electric light. Using this as a metaphor for human accomplishment, Doctor Faustus examines the moral consequences of technological advancement and the changing ways in which we understand ourselves in relation to God, to nature and to each other. Written in 1938 as a libretto without music, the play employs Stein's mesmerizing, stream-of-consciousness-style prose to paint a portrait of human desire, achievement and anxiety that is by turns playful, serious, funny, ironic and sad.

Directed by Mark Lord, associate professor in the arts on the Theresa Helburn Fund, and designed by Senior Lecturer and Designer Hiroshi Iwasaki, the production is staged in the center of Goodhart Theater's cathedral-like auditorium, with its vaulted concrete ceiling and water stains, to convey a sense of the vastness of the world (man-made and otherwise), and of the tension between creation and decay.

This production marks the end of an era for Lord and Iwasaki, as Goodhart Theater will be closing next year for major renovation and remodeling. Over the course of their 20 years collaborating on student productions at Bryn Mawr, they have managed to use almost every space in the building, and in ways the designers likely never envisioned. By using the whole of the auditorium in this final production, they pay tribute to the space.

Doctor Faustus Lights the Lights stars Aditi Vashist, Mariel Rosati, Elizabeth Elliott, Caroline Leger, Tyler Sagardoy, Emily Ambash, Julie Brady, Ilana Vine, Dan Harvester, Hope Kaye, Jessica Rizzo, Conor Weiss, Sarah Kaufman, Josh Mikutis, Alex Stratyner, Alison Mouratis, Amanda Darby, Katie Croyle, Emily Fiegelson, Jessamine Kelley and Laura Bryson. Christina Smith is the production's stage manager.

Tickets for Doctor Faustus Lights the Lights are free for Tri-Co students, faculty and staff and $5 for the general public. Seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Reservations are strongly suggested. Email theater@brynmawr.edu, or call 610-526-5210 to reserve a space.
