2012 CETE STEM Teacher Preparation Conference

Building a network for excellence in STEM teacher education at liberal arts institutions: Doing together what we cannot do alone.

Dr. Maria Rivera-Maulucci, Barnard College
Join Liberal Arts Institutions from around the country in:
- Examining the challenges in our liberal arts environment of recruiting, preparing and supporting our math and science students as they go into STEM teaching
- Share innovative ways that individual institutions have found to address these challenges
- Look for ways that by working together, and sharing resources, we can jointly develop programs and initiatives that will strengthen all of our STEM teacher preparation programs
- Start building a national network of STEM teacher preparation programs at liberal arts institutions to implement and participate in these initiatives
The United States is making a concerted effort to strengthen science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education and having a high quality teacher workforce is a key focus of these efforts. Liberal arts institutions, with their small education programs, prepare a relatively few STEM teachers, but the teachers we do prepare have strong content knowledge, tend to take on leadership roles in their schools, and have the potential to make a disproportionately large impact on the schools in which they teach.
As an outgrowth of the conference, we anticipate forming several working groups that will work to implement selected recommendations of the conference. In summer 2013, we plan to hold a follow up conference to report on progress made and assess next steps to which a wider pool of liberal arts institutions will be invited

One of our goals for this conference is to look for ways that by working
