March 26th, 2010 marked OIG’s Spring 2010 Semester Field Trip. OIG members had a wonderfully busy and informative day of visiting with several Bryn Mawr alumnae, who currently work at some of Philadelphia’s most prominent companies. It was quite inspiring to hear these women offer their perspectives on “Life-post-BMC”, as well as discuss the invaluable experience they had while at Bryn Mawr, and how their college experience truly paved their path to success.

Today we sold our 210 shares of Eagle Rock Energy Partners LP (EROC) with a stellar 94% profit after holding the stock for a whole year. Yufan executed the sale in front us on the computer screen in Taylor F. It was gratifying to take this step forward and cash in some fruits of our labor. All of our members present consented to this sale. EROC is a domestically focused energy company in the business of natural gas. It has been making negative earnings for two years except for two quarters last year. We had looked at this stock before winter but decided to postpone the sale because natural gas prices generally rise during winter.

There was certainly a lot of information today. Ruilin introduced 2 buzz words: Sharpe Ratio and LTM. Both are very useful tools to analyze stocks and portfolio performance. Then we reviewed our portfolio. Yufan sold China Education Alliance (CEU) in front of all of us. We are glad that today it made a 7% growth, that’s more than $100 recouped. Then everyone got a piece of newspaper cut from the Wall Street Journal. We shouted out the words that we didn’t understand. For the detailed list and explanations of the terminologies that we discussed, please check out OIG’s blog. (http://bmcoig.blogs.brynmawr.edu)

Thanks to all of you who presented at OIG’s annual Club donation this week! Because our funding is limited, we could only grant our donations to those that we think are in most need of our support. If you didn’t get funding this time, please don’t be discouraged. There will be another opportunity in the spring. Here is a list of the clubs that we chose to fund this semester: Ping Pong Club ($400), Seven Sisters in China ($600), Bi-co Finance ($250) and MY Lab ($500).If you have any questions, please contact Sophia Abboud.(sabboud@brynmawr.edu)

We made a big decision this week. Recommended by our Portfolio Manager last semester, Chinese Education Alliance (NYSE:CEU) has been in our portfolio for more than half a year. After a presentation by Lingyi about the scattered background of this company, we decided to sell it immediately. Sasha officially proposed to create a prospectus for our future investments. New cash from CEU will contribute to our future investments and club donations. OIG’s New York trip is soon to arrive. We will be heading northward on November 5.

We had a brief review of stock and investment basics. Some of the major points covered: what is a stock, equity financing, common stock and preferred stock, determinants of stock prices, reading stock ticker, market and industry and useful tools in stock analysis and stock concepts. We also reviewed the performance of EROC and decided to stick to it until after January to see how it goes.

This week, OIG debated Google v. Whole Foods, the two stocks picked by our two raffle winners last week. After heated debate and pros and cons, we decided to buy 50 shares of Whole Foods. Most of us value this stock because it has high potentials of growth and can bring diversification to our portfolio. In November, OIG will run a trip to New York to visit Morgan Stanley and J.W. Bristol. Please look out for our emails.
