OVERVIEW : The NEP offers an opportunity for undergraduates to study African history, society, politics, religion, arts and literature. While in Kenya, students will live with homestay families and take courses in Swahili in order to further immerse in the culture. Students embarking on such a venture in Africa must be ready to face both the excitement and the challenges of living and studying in a developing country.

Bryn Mawr College serves as the lead institution for the student study abroad program. Bryn Mawr also coordinates the reciprocal exchange designed to periodically bring scholars from the University of Nairobi to the U.S. for a period of study and research.

 

SEMESTER :  Spring 2010

ELIGIBILITY: Juniors who have taken at least one African Studies or others with appropriate interests or experiences will be considered.

ACADEMIC PROGRAM:  Courses are taken at the University of Nairobi in the social sciences and humanities. (Science courses are not available.) Students also have the option to do independent study, internships and research.

LANGUAGE: English is the language of instruction at the University. Kiswahili tutorials are offered for additional cultural understanding.

HOMESTAY PROGRAM: Students are hosted by Kenyan families in Nairobi.

APPLICATION PROCESS :  Applications are due Oct. 1. Application materials include:  personal statement, resume, transcript, & letters of recommendation.
