NAIROBI EXCHANGE PROGRAM

OVERVIEW: The NEP offers an opportunity for undergraduates to study African history, society, politics, religion, arts and literature. While in Kenya, students will live with homestay families and take courses in Swahili in order to further immerse in the culture. Students embarking on such a venture in Africa must be ready to face both the excitement and the challenges of living and studying in a developing country.
Bryn Mawr College serves as the lead institution for the student study abroad program. Bryn Mawr also coordinates the reciprocal exchange designed to periodically bring scholars from the University of Nairobi to the U.S. for a period of study and research.
SEMESTER : Spring 2011 (March-June)
ELIGIBILITY: Juniors who have taken at least one African Studies or have other appropriate interests or experiences are best prepared for the NEP programs. Others are welcome to apply with special permission.
ACADEMIC PROGRAM: Courses are taken at the University of Nairobi in the social sciences and humanities. (Science courses are not available.) Students also have the option to do independent study, internships and research.
LANGUAGE: English is the language of instruction at the University. Kiswahili tutorials are offered for additional cultural understanding.
HOMESTAY PROGRAM: Students are hosted by Kenyan families in Nairobi.
APPLICATION PROCESS* : Applications are due Oct. 1, 2010. Application materials are available upon request from the program coordinator and include: personal statement, resume, transcript, & letters of recommendation.
