    Meeting for 2/17/04

GREAT meeting tonite!! GREAT turnout!! For those who came, thank you so much!!We had some great ideas for the diversity week discussion and for our part in the diversity week culture show. Below is a brief overview on topics covered.

-Diversity Week: For more info contact fwallace@brynmawr.edu - Faith
is an intern to OID so she is practically in charge of the whole week.
Discussion topic for diversity will focus on "whiteness" and whether or not whiteness is associated with a specific culture, whether or not there is such a thing as inter-ethnic whiteness and how some define themselves as mixed within the category of "white." Examples of this are like a person who is half italian and half polish. To most they are considered white, but arent they
techinically mixed? To spark your interest, visit: http://www.cnn.com/2004/EDUCATION/02/18/whites.only.scholars/index.html

-Culture Show: For the diversity week culture show we are planning on putting together a mantage of personal stories about how each of our parents met. Contact us to participate!!! (no matter if you are mixed race, multiracial etc- all stories are good stories)

    NEW SURVEY!

If you're over 18 and have one biological African parent and one biological parent of European descent, you can enter a lottery for $100 if you complete a 45 minute survey. Contact US for more information.

    Ethnic Ambiguity Discussion

At this meeting we will be discussing if there is any truth behind the idea
that racial ambiguity is the new "hot thing." Come and voice your opinions or listen to others on the idea behind "hotness of racial ambiguity."

Thanks to everyone who attended!! This was one of our best small discussions. Topics brought up: Changing club name to BLEND; whether there is such a thing as being ethnic or having culture if you are white in America; how the addition of mixed models might influence younger generations; should we be optimistic or skeptical of ethnic ambiguity being the "in" thing as of now?; how do monoracial individuals feel on this matter?
