Office hours:  Monday 1-2, Tuesday 11:30-12:30, Wednesday 1-2, and Thursdays 10-11, Room 347
You set the agenda for office hours.  Come with questions about the lecture, reading, homework, exams, grading, or anything else of concern or interest.  Come in groups or as individuals.  If you would like to discuss something in private, you are welcome make a separate appointment with me.

PLI:  Sunday and Wednesday 8 - 9 PM, Room 337
During PLI sessions you will engage in activities that will reinforce what you learned in lecture.  These activities may include working on example problems similar to those assigned for homework, developing a better conceptual understanding of a particular topic, reviewing important mathematics, or developing effective problem solving strategies.

Textbook:  Knight, Jones, and Field, College Physics, A Strategic Approach, Pearson, 2007.

Reserve material:  Physics 101 reserves are located in Collier Library and include several standard texts.  Several non-calculus based books, like the one we are using, are available as well as several that use calculus.  I will place additional materials on reserve or on the web as necessary.

Content:  We will study motion, forces, gravitation, energy, momentum, rotational motion, fluids, oscillations,  and waves (if time permits), (Chapters 1 - 16) following the tentative schedule shown on the assignments page.  The assignments page will be updated regularly, you should check it often for reading and homework assignments.  Please read each assigned chapter before coming to lecture.  Each chapter contains a lot of material.  We will not be able to cover all of this material in detail during the lecture, but I would like you to have read each chapter in its entirety.  In the end, you are responsible for what is covered in class or on homework assignments.

Homework:  Check the assignments page for homework.  You are encouraged to work with your classmates on homework, but your final solutions should be your own.  For additional help with homework you can come to my office hours.

Exams:  There will be two exams during the semester as well as a three-hour final exam.  All exams will be closed book.

Laboratory:  The laboratory is run independently, but is a required part of this course.  You must satisfactorily perform all scheduled experiments in order to pass this course.

Grading:
        homework: 30% total,
        semester exams: 20%  each
        final exam: 30%

Accommodations:  Students who think they may need accommodations in this course because of the impact of a learning, physical, or psychological disability are encouraged to meet with me privately early in the semester to discuss their concerns. Students should also contact Stephanie Bell, Coordinator of Access Services (610-526-7351 or sbell@brynmawr.edu), as soon as possible, to verify their eligibility for reasonable academic accommodations. Early contact will help to avoid unnecessary inconvenience and delays.
