Up-side Down World

WHAT TO DO

Stand with your back to a window.  Put the box over your head making sure that the smiley face is in front of your face -- like a mask.  Make sure the felt flaps are blocking any light from getting into the box. What do you see?  Look for the images you know are outside, can you see them?

**If you cannot see anything at first, be patient.  After a minute or so your eyes will adjust to the light and you should be able to see something!

HOW IT WORKS

You are seeing the images through a pinhole that is placed behind your head and projecting the image, flipped upside down on the wall of the box.  Here is a picture of what is happening to the light rays, and why the image appears to be up-side down.  Remember that light travels in a straight path.  Play with the ŒPinhole Viewerı to explore this concept further and find out why the size of the pinhole matters!
