Opportunities for Students

IHS Summer Conferences for Political Science Students

With many of your students considering their summer plans, I'd like to recommend the free, weeklong summer seminars offered by the Institute for Humane Studies. Now in their 30th year, our seminars examine classical liberal ideas and apply them to topics in political science, history, economics, law, and more - providing an interdisciplinary, intellectual experience.

This summer, Professors of Political Science Mark Pennington (University of London), Michael Munger (Duke University), and Randy Simmons (Utah State University), among others, will be part of our seminar faculty.

A few of our seminars may be of particular interest to political science students and graduating seniors:

  • Our Liberty & Current Issues seminar examines contemporary political and economic issues, such as business regulation, privacy, and freedom of speech, and considers classical liberal approaches. Held at George Mason University from May 29-June 24.
  • Liberty & Society will appeal to more advanced students seeking to examine sophisticated arguments for liberty. Lectures will explore fundamental policy questions such as how the incentives of policy makers influence the programs they design. Held at Wake Forest University and Chapman University in May and June.
  • The Journalism & a Free Society seminar - perfect for talented writers interested in political reporting - features career advice from journalists and lectures about the foundations of a free press and working with statistics. Held at Bryn Mawr College, June 5-11.
  • At Liberty & Education, students interested in education policy can examine the history of American K-12 education and evaluate ideas for reform. Held at Loyola University, July 30-Aug 11.

A typical seminar day includes lectures and discussion groups plus free time in the afternoon to enjoy the campus and a nightly social. Students can look forward to informative discussions that start in lecture break-out groups, extend into meals, and continue into the evening.

Here are some key points about the 2010 IHS Summer Seminars:

  • 11 weeklong seminars, varying by topic and complexity
  • No cost to attend (students only pay for their travel)
  • Held on college campuses from May to August
  • Professors from many disciplines: political science, law, economics, and more
  • Students from around the world

The application deadline is March 31 (those who apply by March 15 will receive a free book).

Cheers,

Keri
