| How long does it take to complete the postbac program?
Typically, the program takes one full academic year plus one summer to complete. Depending on the science courses you have already had and when you took them, your time in the program could be slightly shorter.
What are the requirements for admission?
The program is designed primarily for those who are changing careers, many of whom are new to science. You can be considered for the program if you have or will have a Bachelor’s degree when you plan to start the program and you had a strong academic record in college.
Since this is not a remedial program, you will not be considered for admission under the following circumstances:
• You have completed too many premedical science courses in the past five to seven years.
• Your application does not demonstrate an ability to handle a rigorous academic course load.
• You have taken the MCAT in the past five to seven years.
How competitive is admission to the program?
Very competitive. Your application must demonstrate your ability to handle an academically rigorous course load in the sciences as well as a strong commitment to and understanding of medicine.
Can the postbac program prepare you for other health profession schools in addition to medicine?
The core science courses in the Bryn Mawr postbac curriculum can prepare students for medical school, veterinary school, dental school and other health profession schools.
How do I have my SAT scores sent to Bryn Mawr?
If your SAT scores are listed on your high school transcript, simply send us a copy along with your application. If not, you can request your scores from the Educational and Testing Service by calling (609) 771-7600 and giving them our school code, which is 2477. If you have never taken the SAT, we will accept ACT scores.
If you have taken any other standardized tests for graduate or professional schools, such as the GRE or LSAT, please send us a copy of your scores with your application.
What are the postbac program requirements?
Full-time students must register for three courses per semester and must take a minimum of six courses at Bryn Mawr. After enrolling in the program, you must take all of your basic premedical courses at Bryn Mawr. Calculus is offered, but not required, because it is not a requirement at most medical schools.
What is the normal course load per semester?
Three courses per semester. Each usually has a laboratory.
Will I be permitted to retake science courses previously taken?
Generally not. However, if you took the courses more than five years ago, retaking them is a possibility.
How many postbac students are there?
Typically no more than 75 students are enrolled in the program each year.
Who will be in my classes?
You will usually be in a predominantly postbac section but, depending on enrollments and class size, you may be in a class with our undergraduates.
What is the age range of individuals in the program?
Postbac students typically range in age from their early 20s to mid-40s.
Can postbac students have a part-time job?
Holding a job is discouraged because of the rigor of the coursework. Plus, many postbacs volunteer in medical settings and participate in medically related activities.
Is every applicant interviewed?
No. Only those applicants who are considered highly qualified will be invited for an interview.
How long does the admissions process take?
It can take six to eight weeks from the time we receive your completed application to the time we inform you of the decision of the admissions committee.
Can I be accepted directly from my undergraduate college?
Yes, as long as you have a Bachelor’s degree by the time you start the postbac program.
What financing options are available to postbac students?
Postbacs are eligible for Federal Stafford Loans at the 5th year undergraduate level, alternative private loans and monthly payment plans.
What medical school linkage options are available to me?
Bryn Mawr College has consort arrangements with a number of top medical schools.
Is assistance provided for obtaining a medically related job during the “glide year”?
Yes. Workshops are held during the academic year to help you find a glide year job, and a list of medically related job opportunities is maintained in the Postbaccalaureate Premedical Program office. |
