Dear Bryn Mawr and Haverford College Faculty, Staff and Students,

Board members, presidents, and senior administrators from both Colleges have been meeting over the past year to explore ways in which the Colleges can improve services to students and decrease costs through collaboration in administrative areas.   Our initial discussions have focused on the Dining Services and Public Safety/Safety and Security Departments at Bryn Mawr and Haverford, and have resulted in a number of administrative changes that we will begin to implement this fall.  Over the course of the year we will extend our examination of the potential benefits of collaboration to the Registrar’s Offices, Information Technology, Purchasing, Facilities Services, Copying and Printing Services, Health Services and the Post Offices.    Where combined operations lead to the potential for position reductions, it is our intention to achieve these through attrition wherever possible.

Public Safety/Safety and Security Department

The administration of the Bryn Mawr and Haverford Public Safety/Safety and Security Departments will be combined under one Director – the Haverford Director of Safety and Security, Tom King.  Tom King will lead a study of operations, working with Mike Hill and Haverford and Bryn Mawr supervisors.  The study will be completed by December 1, and will include a plan for the new administrative structure and for cost savings and service improvement opportunities for both colleges.  This study will examine options for:

  • A joint dispatch operation
  • Sharing staff members during periods when there is less activity than normal on both campuses
  • Sharing on-call staff to reduce overtime costs.

Dining Services

Administration of the Bryn Mawr and Haverford Dining Services will be combined under one Director – the Bryn Mawr Director of Dining Services, Bernie Chung. Bernie Chung will lead a study of dining operations, working with John Francone and Bryn Mawr and Haverford managers.  The study will be completed by December 1, 2009 and will include a plan for the new administrative structure and for cost savings, revenue enhancements and service improvement opportunities at both colleges.  Areas to be studied include:

  • Instituting a Dining Services student employment program at Haverford similar to the one at Bryn Mawr.
  • Reducing overtime costs by sharing staff.
  • Collaboration in the management of the catering operations.
  • Collaboration in the management of the two cafes.
  • Operational efficiencies through the implementation of best administrative practices at both Colleges.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Jerry Berenson, Chief Administrative Officer at Bryn Mawr (jberenso@brynmawr.edu), or Dick Wynn, Vice President for Finance and Administration at Haverford (grwynn@haverford.edu).

Sincerely,

Steve Emerson
