Committee on Academic Priorities (CAP) Guidelines for Requests for Additional Tenure Track Positions
If a department or program wishes to request an additional tenure track appointment this year to search for next year, it will need to submit a request to the Committee on Academic Priorities, via the Provost's Office. A letter of intent should be submitted by October 1. The full proposal in electronic format is due by November 1.
The full proposal due November 1 should:
- Describe position (describe some alternatives as well and discuss why they are not as good).
- Describe the applicant pool for the position (and for some alternatives).
- Give a rationale for the position (why the slot is needed, what difference it will make, what department would do without it, what are the alternatives; include some history of staffing in the department and long-range planning).
- Give enrollment figures for the past decade, broken down by introductory and advanced courses; please include numbers of majors and, for departments with graduate programs, numbers of graduate students, with some analysis of trends. The Registrar should be able to provide you with raw data which should then be included in your request.
- Discuss the effect of the position on allied departments and on your Haverford counterpart (if there is one). Please include a letter from the counterpart chair commenting on the proposal. Click for the Guidelines for Cooperation between Counterpart Departments
.
- Discuss the impact on interdisciplinary programs and College Seminars.
- Discuss the impact on leave coverage.
- Include an abstract or abbreviated summary of the proposal that will be posted on the web. These postings will alert other members of the academic community to the proposed requests.
- Submit or update the department/program long-range plan (submitted as .pdf or .doc).
