With respect to the consumption of alcoholic beverages, Bryn Mawr students are subject both to the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and to the Social Honor Code. The legal drinking age in Pennsylvania is twenty-one; thus most freshmen, sophomores and juniors, and even some seniors are below the legal drinking age. The alcohol policy that is published in the Student Handbook, while recognizing that students are responsible for their own well-being, also highlights their responsibility not to engage in behavior that puts fellow students at risk of physical or mental harm or of incurring legal liability. The Handbook encourages students to participate in maintaining a bi-college community "in which alcohol abuse and its effects are minimal," and a social climate "in which alcohol is not the focus of parties and other social events." If you have organized an on-campus gathering for your students you should therefore serve only non-alcoholic refreshments. Faculty and staff members entertaining students off campus are subject to the laws of the Commonwealth as individual social hosts with personal liability for the safety of their guests.
