Reappointment Review Dossiers

This page provides an overview of the items in the dossiers for candidates who are being reviewed for reappointment and/or promotion. The first section describes the elements of a typical dossier. Candidates prepare two sets of materials: one set is for the department chair (and the departmental review), the other set is for the Committee on Appointments. It is important to note, however, that--for certain types of reviews--dossiers can be more streamlined. The second section--a table--specifies the dossier requirements for each type of reappointment review.

Elements of a typical dossier
The candidate is to give these to the department chair:

  1. a current curriculum vitae;
  2. a list of courses taught at the College and their syllabi, with an indication of those courses which the candidate has introduced to the curriculum;
  3. a list of honors papers, M.A. theses, Ph.D. dissertations, completed and in progress under the candidate's supervision;
  4. teaching evaluations in their original envelopes from at least the last three years, with the course syllabi;
  5. at least one copy of each publication, including books, articles and preprints (numbers needed are given below);
  6. unpublished manuscripts;
  7. current grant proposals;
  8. a self-assessment including a statement of goals and plans in the areas of research, teaching, and service.
  9. names and addresses of six outside reviewers, as specified elsewhere, if they are required for the candidate's reappointment procedure.

The candidate is to submit these to the Office of the Provost for the outside reviewers and the Committee on Appointments:

  1. a curriculum vitae (n copies; see below);
  2. self-assessment (n copies); NB: the self-assessment may omit any strictly intramural issues raised in the version presented to the department;
  3. one or more copies of each book; NB: reviewers will be asked to consult the book(s) in their home libraries unless copies are provided for them;
  4. articles, book chapters, and unpublished manuscripts (n copies); NB: only manuscripts under consideration by a publisher will be circulated;
  5. grant proposals (n copies); NB: Candidates for reappointment with tenure may instruct the Provost's Office not to circulate grant proposals.
NB: With the exception of published books, materials submitted as part of the dossier and sent to outside reviewers will not be returned.

Additions to the dossier:

Candidates may add materials to their dossiers at any point in the review process and may communicate to the Provost or the President, in writing, any additional information which they feel to be pertinent to their review. Such material may be considered as part of the review. Manuscripts and published materials will be returned to the candidate. In preparing the dossier, and thereafter throughout the reappointment process, the candidate may consult both a former member of the Committee on Appointments designated by the Committee, usually the outgoing Chair, and the Chair of the Faculty, who serve as advisors on reappointment and promotion procedures.

Dossier requirements for specific types of reappointment review:
