College reviews of Associate Professors for promotion to the rank of Full Professor.
Faculty on Continuing Non-Tenure Track Appointment
At the discretion of the Committee on Appointments, evaluations of a CNTT faculty member's work may be sought during the reappointment process to a term in a Continuing Non-Tenure Track position.
How are outside reviewers chosen?
When outside reviews are required, the candidate and the department both provide lists of potential reviewers' names to the Committee on Appointments, as follows:
-
The candidate's list
The names and addresses of at least six persons, prominent in the candidate's field, from whom the Committee on Appointments may solicit confidential evaluations of the candidate's scholarly accomplishments and promise together with a brief statement as to who these individuals are, specifying rank and any relation to the candidate. At least three of these persons should be identified as not having had close association with the candidate previously.
- The department's list
The names and addresses of at least six persons prominent in the candidate's field, suggested by the senior members of the department, from whom the Committee on Appointments may solicit confidential evaluations of the candidate's scholarly accomplishments and promise. This group of outside readers should not include persons who have had a close association with the candidate previously, or persons nominated by the candidate as outside readers. The names of this group of readers should not be made known to the candidate. The department may honor a request by the candidate that an individual's name not be on the departmental list. No more than one name may be so requested.
The candidate's and department's lists of reviewers should include titles, current mail and e-mail addresses, telephone numbers for all persons named, and a brief explanation of each person's qualifications.
For candidates for promotion whose work has recently received outside review, the Committee on Appointments may elect not to seek new evaluations from external readers.
How is an outside review conducted?
- The chair of the Committee on Appointments writes to all the suggested outside consultants, both those named by the candidate and those named by the department, to determine if they are willing to serve. If less than three on either list are willing to serve, the chair goes back to either the candidate or the department or both for more names. The chair of the Committee on Appointments handles all subsequent correspondence with them.
- When outside letters are received, a set is made available to the department chair after the departmental recommendation has been submitted to the Committee on Appointments. The chair should share these letters with the faculty who have participated in preparing the departmental recommendation. Department members are expected to read the letters from a central file, available in the department office, and prepare a commentary on the letters, which becomes a part of the information the Committee on Appointments considers in reaching its decision.
- The members of the Committee on Appointments, the Provost, and the President may, in addition, consult other scholars of their own choosing.
- Outside consultants willing to review a candidate's scholarly achievement and promise will be asked to consider the candidate's curriculum vitae, self-assessment, published books and articles, and completed manuscripts.
