Curriculum Development Support

The Office of the Provost has funds available to support curriculum development initiatives. These funds are principally available for continuing faculty members who wish to develop new courses or revise existing ones in order to incorporate new digital technologies into the teaching and learning experience. Funds are available, for example, to support the development of course websites; for the acquisition and/or development of interactive course materials; for incorporating further multi-media technologies into a course; and for attending workshops to acquire advanced skills. Some monies are available for summer stipends ($2,500) and student assistance. We cannot, however, underwrite equipment acquisition. This program is directed towards those departments not already aided by outside grants which support efforts of this sort. Funding is available on a competitive basis and is not likely to exceed $5,000 per project.

For summer 2005 and the 2005-06 academic year, the following projects were supported:

Proposal Guidelines

A few matters of general policy: the College provides centralized support for multimedia technology. Projects should make the most effective use they can of the higher-end equipment and the trained assistance available centrally. Departments and/or individual faculty members who wish to request special software should not seek to duplicate such facilities available elsewhere.

Funding for projects may be contingent, too, on a department's or faculty member's willingness to participate in training.

In making a proposal, a department or faculty member should provide information and address issues such as:

  • the name of the course(s) and when it (they) might be offered, whether the proposal(s) is (are) for new or revised course(s);
  • the level and number of students likely to take the course(s);
  • how the project will benefit students and enhance their learning;
  • the place of this work in the larger context of the faculty member's pedagogy and that of the department;
  • whether the project might have applicability to other courses in the department, or in other departments;
  • the specific activities the project will support, including a detailed budget, complete with anticipated equipment and support costs, and indications of other potential sources of funding for the project;
  • a schedule for the implementation of the project; and
  • a statement of support from the department chair or chair of an allied department.

Project proposals may be submitted at any time to the Office of the Provost. They should be clearly identified as requests for support from the Curriculum Development Fund. Proposals which involve summer support should, however, be submitted by March 31 to allow sufficient time for their review. Faculty members who have ideas for projects are encouraged to inquire about support even if the March 31 deadline has passed.

Individuals are advised to consult Suzy Spain (5164, and at sspain@brynmawr.edu) about their eligibility for this support.
