Textbook
The textbook can be purchased
in the Swarthmore College Bookstore
(located in Tarble). Russian Stage One: Live from Moscow comes
with an exercise book, video tape and audio cassette. The Language Resource
Center in Kohlberg Hall has the Stage One: Live from Moscow CD-ROM should
you want additional work on vocabulary and grammar.
Grading
Class
participation and attendance are crucial to the development of both your own
language skills and those of your classmates. Unexcused absences will count
against your grade, as will failure to complete and turn in daily homework assignments.
Since homework assignments include regular listening assignments, you may want
to familiarize yourself with the excellent language learning center on the third
floor of Kohlberg as early as possible.
During the first semester, we will cover seven chapters from the textbook, at the end of chapters 1-6, you will have a 40 minute exam. The final exam will be cumulative, with an emphasis on material from Chapter 7. There will be no mid-term exam.
During the second semester, we will cover all of the chapters from the textbook except for the 3 day review unit. An exam follows each chapter except for Unit 13, which will be emphasized on the final exam. There will be no mid-term exam.
In the MWF conversation section led by Genya Katsenelinboigen, you will be evaluated based on your in-class performance during the last conversation period for each chapter. You will also have a final oral exam at the end of the semester. The total will count for 20% of your overall course grade.
Students are required to attend Russian Table every week. Russian Table provides the opportunity for students from all levels to use their Russian with native and non-native speakers in a relaxed environment.
