All readings, lectures and discussions will be in English
Primary Distribution Course (Humanities)
This course offers an interdisciplinary
introduction to Russian culture over the past thousand years up to the present.
Tri-College professors and other specialists in relevant disciplines such
as Sociology and Anthropology, History, Russian Literature, Music and Theatre
will present in-class lectures throughout the semester. The course aims to
inform students of major developments in Russian history, society, and culture
through a variety of media, including historical documents, literature, art,
music, and film.
For an additional
one-half credit, students of Russian may meet for a supplemental weekly class
with readings and discussions in Russian taught by Gena Katsenelinboigen.
Grading
Due to the range of material covered by this course, class
attendance
and participation
are high priorities. Reading and viewing assignments
must be completed before class, and a
discussion question
on the material
submitted in advance.
Written work for the course includes three 5-7 page papers; these papers provide an opportunity to explore topics of particular interest in greater depth than we will cover in class. Papers will be exchanged and critiqued by other students, then returned to the author for revision based reader comments. Papers must be turned in on time to facilitate the exchange of papers.
The final examination consists of an identification section and short and long essay questions.
