Renovation of Bern Schwartz Gymnasium

  • The Fitness Center
  • The Pool
  • Training Spaces

A large glass atrium built around the current entrance will reach into and open up the second-floor fitness area, offering students a view of the outside world as they work out.

A large window overlooking the pool will give spectators an excellent vantage point for swim meets and introduce more light into the building. The expanded 8,000 square-foot fitness area will include a section dedicated to yoga, Pilates and group fitness classes; state-of-the art cardio and strength equipment; wifi internet access and flat screen televisions.

Students, faculty, staff and alumnae will also benefit from newly renovated locker rooms and shower facilities.

Participation in aquatics classes has doubled in the past two years, and student demand is expected to increase. The masters swim program, water aerobics and deep water fitness classes are also open to faculty, staff and visiting alumnae.

Besides its regular programming, the aquatic facility accommodates a constant stream of students, faculty, staff and summer camp participants interested in swimming or in general fitness.

The new design will envision a reconfigured bulkhead, so that lap swimming and aquatics classes can occur together in the same space.

Just over 17 percent of Bryn Mawr's students participate in intercollegiate and club sports. That number will grow as more students enter Bryn Mawr having competed in high school sports.

Completely renovated locker rooms, training rooms, and staff offices will support Bryn Mawr's athletes, coaching staff, and athletic department as they compete in the Centennial Conference.

These enhancements will benefit the on-campus community and the hundreds of athletes from dozens of other colleges to which Bryn Mawr plays host every year.
