Degree Programs

Master of Social Service (MSS)

Leadership in social work over the next decade will depend on the knowledge and level of professional skill and practice experience brought into the field by new graduates. The Master of Social Service (MSS) program responds to this need through a carefully balanced curriculum designed to explore the array of opportunities available to social workers, equipping them with the flexibility needed for continual growth in a changing world. Bryn Mawr's Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research MSS degree is equivalent in both licensure and use to the MSW degree.

Master of Social Service/Master of Public Health (MSS/MPH)

Bryn Mawr College's Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research and Thomas Jefferson University's School of Population Health (JSPH) are partnering to offer a unique opportunity to complete a dual-degree in social work, MSS, and public health, MPH. This collaboration acknowledges the long-standing synergy between social work and public health and also recognizes the growing interest among professionals to further their preparation by earning multiple graduate degrees. The MSS/MPH reflects the mission of both institutions to enhance the wellness and quality of life of individuals, families and their communities through the shared commitment to social justice and human rights. Jefferson's MPH program is nationally accredited through the Council of Education for Public Health (CEPH).

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

The Doctor of Philosophy in Social Work program is designed to support the development of leaders in social work education and research. Effective leaders must be skilled at knowing how to ask the right questions, gather evidence systematically, and interpret it critically and with sophistication. Founded during the tumult of Progressive Era reform, the program has a long and distinguished record; indeed, the very first doctoral degree in social work awarded by a college or university in the United States was awarded at Bryn Mawr in 1920.
