Using a nationally representative sample, we will examine characteristics of children, ages 0 to 12, and their primary caregivers .

Pie Charts:

  1. Edlevel – Level of education of the parent
  2. Relig – Number of times attending religious services per week
  3. Expect – Educational expectations of the parent for the child

Bar Charts:

  1. Timeshos – number of times child has been in the hospital
  2. Totprobs – the total number of health problems for the child
  3. Lowwt – is the child low birth weight?
  4. hyper – is the child hyperactive/ADHD/ADD
  5. Numbspank – the number of times the child was spanked in the past week

Frequencies:

  1. Numbspank – the number of times the child was spanked in the past week
  2. Timeshos– number of times child has been in the hospital

Regressions:

We will now examine the relationship between variables using regression analysis.    Regression analysis is a method for determining whether there are or are not relationships between variables.    It also indicates the size and the direction of these relationships.

In example number 1, we will see what factors may affect child reading scores.    Some of the factors hypothesized to affect reading scores include

Many other factors affect reading scores but we use these few factors as examples.

Use the following variables

  1. DV: Logread – READING SCORES
  2. IV: Numspank -- # of times spanked in the last week
  3. IV: Dropout – head of household is a high school dropout
  4. IV: PERPOV – percentage of childhood years with income below the poverty line
  5. IV: Agecore – age of the child

In example number 2, we will examine what factors influence the number of emotional problems for the child.  Some of these hypothesized influences include:

Use the following variables to see which of the factors affects the number of emotional problems for children.

  1. DV: # of emotional problems for the child.    Sumprob – 30 possible emotional problems
  1. IV: Pclassbb – parenting class before birth of child
  2. IV: POV – at or below the poverty line
  3. IV: Headwife – nuclear family
  4. IV: Newimmi – new immigrant family

In example number 3, we will examine factors that affect the self-perception of the child.    Some of the hypothesized factors include:

Use the following variables to examine these relationships.

  1. DV: Imgood -- A lot of things about me are good
  1. IV: Female – child is female
  2. IV: Agecore – age of the child
  3. IV: Childcnt -- # of children in the family
  4. IV: Poorcntl – the parent feels little control over the problems in life
