Course Requirements


JOINT M.S.S. DEGREE

AND

HOME AND SCHOOL VISITOR CERTIFICATION PROGRAM

 

Bryn Mawr College Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research is authorized by the Pennsylvania Department of Education to provide the education necessary for the Home and School Visitor (School Social Worker) certificate.  Interested students must discuss the program with their advisor and Co-Dean Marcia Martin.

 


COURSE REQUIREMENTS


The courses required for the    HSV certificate and the field instruction in a school setting may be applied toward satisfaction of the MSS requirements.  Joint program students must complete a total of 18 courses plus a continuing education requirement*, Psychological Assessment #540.

 

HSV required courses are:                               

  • Education Law for Social Workers (offered only during summer session I) (338)
  • Public Education: Issues in School Social Work Practice (offered in the fall semester) (336)

 

plus a third from the following electives pertaining to treatment of children and adolescents:

  • Adolescents in Family Therapy (398)
  • Clinical Social Work Practice with Children and Adolescents (328)
  • Clinical Social Work and Substance Abuse (330)
  • Clinical Social Work and Trauma: Theory and Practice Issues (346)
  • Child Welfare Policy, Practice and Research (352)
  • Contextual Interventions with Severely Challenged Families (384)
  • Family Therapy: Theory and Practice (319)
  • Group Treatment (324)
  • Psychopathology (304)

 

All MSS students who are interested in the Home and School Visitor Certification program must apply to the program, consult their faculty advisors about course selection, and arrange an interview with Co-Dean Marcia Martin.  In addition, students must consult with the Director of Field Instruction about appropriate field placements in the second year of study.

 

Upon enrollment in the program, students must complete the “Declaration of Intent to Seek Certification as Home and School Visitor.”  Forms are available in the Career Development Office, Room 108.

 

Upon graduation, the GSSWSR recommends to the Pennsylvania Department of Education that the graduate receive the certification of Home and School Visitor.  The graduate must comply with all state requirements including submitting a copy of their Pennsylvania social work license or Praxis Examination results in reading, writing, and math.

* "Psychological Testing for Social Workers" is completed within the Continuing Education program.

    Registration is processed through the Career Development Office, Room 108.
