Message from the President
During my first few months at Bryn Mawr, I have had the privilege of meeting with the faculty, staff, students, and Board of Advisors of the Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research. I have had the opportunity to learn about the School’s founding, mission, and curriculum, and I have been inspired by the School’s rich tradition of academic excellence and service.
I have spoken often about the fundamental values, core commitments, and abiding concerns that define our challenges and opportunities at Bryn Mawr. Excellence in education, access and inclusiveness in providing that education, and agency in acting for the greater good are all central to our aspirations. With its founding in 1915, the Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research oriented Bryn Mawr toward an ethos of engagement, and reaffirmed the College’s position as a force for social and economic justice and social change. The School is critical to Bryn Mawr’s core mission. Indeed, the School is part of Bryn Mawr’s DNA, a main component of who we are and who we hope to become. The highly successful graduates of the School’s programs embody our institutional goals and are strong ambassadors for the College in our local and global community.
This fall we have mounted a national search for a director of the Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research who will guide us in maintaining and growing our almost ninety-four year tradition of academic excellence and social responsibility. We will continue to explore opportunities to strengthen connections between the School and the broader Bryn Mawr undergraduate and graduate experience while at the same time preserving the unique identity of the School and the vital feeling of community that is expressed so powerfully by the faculty, staff, students, and alumnae/i.
Bryn Mawr’s unique model of combining a pre-eminent undergraduate college for women with outstanding graduate programs in arts and sciences and social work excites me as an educator and scholar. The Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research is indeed a jewel in the crown that is Bryn Mawr.
