Graduate School of Social Work
and Social Research Names New Dean
Darlyne Bailey has been appointed dean and professor of the Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research and special assistant to the president for community partnerships at Bryn Mawr College.
“Darlyne brings a rare mix of academic accomplishment and visionary leadership to the College that will serve the entire community well as she takes on the role of dean and the newly created role of heading up our community partnership programs,” said Bryn Mawr College President Jane McAuliffe.
Bailey was the founding dean of the University of Minnesota’s College of Education and Human Development and has previously served as the dean of the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences at Case Western Reserve University.
“I am honored to be joining Bryn Mawr College,” said Bailey. “The Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research is legendary. Both the school and the entire College community embrace the authentic enactment of values that I believe are essential to our best serving the world of today and the world of tomorrow—social justice for all, honesty about all, and transparency to all.”
Bailey received her bachelor of arts in psychology and her secondary-education certification at Lafayette College, a master’s degree in psychiatric social work from Columbia University, (where she would later serve as vice president for academic affairs and the dean of Columbia University’s Teachers College) and her Ph.D. in organizational behavior at the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University.
As a college and university administrator Bailey has been a trailblazer. She has been the first African-American woman to hold every one of her posts.
“What’s most important is to ensure that I’m not the last,” said Bailey.
“Dr. Bailey’s extensive experience prepares her well to join us in envisioning, designing, and co-creating new multidisciplinary opportunities, in identifying, cultivating, and securing new financial resources, and in building new connections and partnerships both within and beyond our campus,” said Dean of Graduate Studies Liz McCormack, who headed the search for the new dean.
