The student association is beginning a collaborative community project to create a mural on the concrete wall of "the pit" outside the school of social work. The planning committee (pictured at right) is working to involve as many students in decisions regarding the mural's design and creation as possible. A working design was decided upon with community input, and painting will begin in April with a community picnic. Phase one of the mural project is estimated to be complete by May of 2006. If you are interested in being involved in this project, please contact Jessica Johnson at jljohnso@brynmawr.edu. Advocacy ProjectsStarting in January 2006, two school-wide advocacy projects will commence
on the issues of "Loan Forgiveness for Social Workers" and "Compensation for
the Wrongfully Convicted." On January 14th and 15th, approximatley 30 students
will participate in an Organizer Training, which will be led by Mike Gecan and
colleagues from the Industrial Areas Foundation (www.industrialareasfoundation.org
). At this training, students will gain basic organizing and advocacy skills
and design initial advocacy plans for the two issues.
If you are interested in attending the Organizing Training and/or to learn
more about the Advocacy Projects, contact Josh Noble: jnoble@brynmawr.edu
Fall 2005 advocacy efforts sponsored by the Student Association focused on
educating and mobilizing students on the Federal Budget Reconciliation Act which
included efforts to cut billions of dollars in programs like TANF, Medicare,
Food Stamps and Student Loans. As part of this effort, four students lobbied
Congressman Jim Gerlach, who represents Bryn Mawr, in person. Jim is one
of a handful of House Republicans who voted against this bill.
Garden DayOn Wednesday, November 23 the Student Association sponsored a garden project on the School's campus. Volunteers planted 350 daffodil bulbs at the entrance to the grounds, and over 200 daylillies that were donated by Professor Toba Kerson from her own garden. The group is looking forward to bright spring colors, and to organizing another work day after winter.
On Sunday, October 16, 2006 the Student Association held a potluck picnic at the School. About 25 members of the Graduate School community, students, faculty, family and friends, gathered for dinner, games and camaraderie. A great time was had by all!
